When I was on the detox unit at McLean hospital, I met a young man who'd been basically disowned by his parents and was heading for a shelter, where he would wait for a bed in holdings, where he would wait for a bed in a halfway house. I gave him $10, because I had it and he didn't have a cent. I'm a firm believer in "paying forward"–when you have, you give.
